“There is a season for walking away
Time for a reason not in disgrace
There is a killer locked in your head
There is a killer in your strength “ – Sarah Basko
Emergence is a commanding piece with a terse tempo.
It is a nod to utilitarian construction with sharp wit and little whimsy. In couples or with the whole troupe, the dancers are masterful tools
and Bonachela the carpenter.
During the creative process, Bonachela conceived an idea for a prop
that resulted in manipulated movements; a large cube traversed by secured elastics created controlled, yet unpredictable resistance against limbs
and torsos. Experimentation by dancers within the cube yielded fantastically fresh, modern choreography that was incorporated into
the piece. These unique movements become the core semblance of Bonachela’s underlying concept: emergence architecture and exposed design.
Dion Lee bolsters the visual feast through interactive costume artistry. Lee’s creations mimic the ultra complex movements expressed by Bonachela’s choreography. This collaboration between clothing designer and choreographer is sensible seeing that the encompassing Dion Lee aesthetic is focused on cut. Ingenuity ensues with every pivot as the right profile reveals a starched lapel and the left profile a metallic leotard.
